Chandeliers elegantly transform your space. From traditional styles that sparkle to modern styles that balance function and art, chandeliers are designed to be noticed. There are many shapes, sizes, and finishes to choose from which can make the process feel overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you.
What to Consider When Looking for Chandeliers
There are some key considerations when looking for a chandelier: shape, hanging height, and light quantity. However, the first thing you should look at is the dimension of the room where you want to install a chandelier. This way, you will have an idea of the approximate size needed.
Size
Add the dimensions (in feet) of a room to find the minimum diameter (in inches) for the chandelier. For example, if the dining room is 12’ x 14’, add 12 and 14 to equal 26. A 26” diameter would be the minimum size used in the room for maximum impact. For linear chandeliers, the length should measure between 1/3 and 1/2 the length of the table.
Shape
Chandeliers come in many shapes: round, square, and rectangular. Round and square chandeliers are classic. If you’re going in that direction, consider the height of the rooms’ ceilings. Taller ceilings call for a more elongated chandelier that will fill the vertical space in the room. Oval chandeliers are gaining popularity. They tend to be wider than linear fixtures, which look better in rooms with taller ceilings.
Hanging Height
Round or square chandeliers over a table should be about 30” from the top of the surface. For wider tables or taller ceilings, increase that height by about 3” to 6”. Rectangular chandeliers can be installed higher to shine their brightest. If your chandelier is placed in a foyer or great room, the bottom of the chandelier should be a minimum of 7’ from the floor. This way, guests can walk under it without worrying.
Light Quantity
Similar to selecting the correct size of a chandelier, it is also important to consider the amount of illumination required for a room. LED lights are much more common in homes, so it is now measured in lumens. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has recommendations for each room in a home, based on desired brightness levels. For a dining room, it is recommended that you measure 10 to 20 foot-candles of measured light. The formula uses that number multiplied by the room area. For instance, a 12x15 room would be 180x10 foot-candles, which equals 1800, or for more illumination, 180x20 = 3600. This means that a dining room of that size should have a chandelier that provides between 1800 and 3600 lumens.
